AITA for secretly keeping a cash gift my in-laws gave me instead of sharing it with my spouse?
My in-laws don’t like me much, so I was shocked when, during a recent visit, my husband’s grandfather pulled me aside and handed me $2,000 in cash. He said it was just for me and told me to keep it quiet.
So, I did.
I didn’t tell my husband. I used the money to treat myself—a spa day, new clothes, and some personal expenses. No shared bills, no groceries, just me-money.
Then, my husband found out. He’s furious, saying that since we’re married, the money should have been shared. His family agrees, calling me selfish for keeping it secret.
I feel like this was my gift, meant just for me, and it’s not like I took money out of our finances. But now I’m wondering if I should have told him. AITA?

The AITA Court of Public Opinion is now in session.
Plaintiff: Husband (A.K.A. The Financially Betrayed Spouse)
Charges: Financial Secrecy, Misuse of Funds, and Failure to Disclose
Defendant: OP (A.K.A. The Silent Beneficiary)
Defense: Personal Autonomy, Gift Ownership, and “Grandpa Said It Was Mine”
Statement of Facts:
OP was given $2,000 in cash by her husband’s grandfather.
Grandpa specifically told OP not to tell anyone.
OP kept it secret and spent it entirely on herself.
Husband found out later and felt betrayed.
Husband and in-laws believe OP should have shared the money.
OP argues it was a personal gift, not a shared marital asset.

The Verdict:
Marriage is about trust and transparency, and this case tips dangerously into financial infidelity.
Was OP legally entitled to keep her gift? Yes. But when you're married, secrecy over large sums of money is a bad look.
Final Judgment: YTA (You're The A-hole).
Sentence: Mandatory participation in all future “financial decisions” (including his impulse Amazon purchases).
Was OP in the wrong for keeping the cash, or does a gift belong solely to the recipient? Let’s hear it in the comments!
